Great Tapestry of Scotland

The Great Tapestry of Scotland is one of the world’s largest community arts projects, featuring 160 linen panels hand-stitched by 1,000 people. Located in a purpose-built gallery in Galashiels, this 143-metre masterpiece uses 300 miles of wool to depict 12,000 years of history.

This remarkable work illustrates Scotland’s heritage from ancient land formations to the modern era. Visitors can see panels detailing the Vikings, Mary Queen of Scots, and the Re-creation of the Scottish Parliament. Notable additions include a commemorative stitch for Andy Murray’s 2013 Wimbledon victory.

At the visitor centre, guests can explore the tapestry displayed in chronological order and view visiting exhibits in the gallery. The facility also features a workshop space, a shop, and a café for visitors to enjoy during their stay in the heartland of the Scottish Borders.
