Terringzean Castle

Terringzean Castle, pronounced "Tringan," is a Category B listed 14th-century ruin. Situated within the Dumfries House estate, this "castle of enceinte" occupies a high, steep bank overlooking the River Lugar and the Terringzean Holm.
The site is steeped in history, having been held by notable families including the Craufurds—relatives of Sir William Wallace’s mother—and the Earls of Loudoun. Visitors can explore the remains of a vaulted octangular tower featuring walls two meters thick and square ashlar masonry. The site also reveals a medieval hall house and a protective dry moat, which remains clearly visible today.
You can enjoy a stroll past the castle along "The Avenue" to view the ruins and excavation trenches. Notable features include a wheel-stair, the remains of outbuildings, and a sizeable courtyard. The elevated position offers striking views of the Lugar Water and the surrounding historic landscape.
