Dumfries House is a stunning Palladian country house located within a large estate in Ayrshire, Scotland. Built in the 1750s by architects John and Robert Adam, this "exceptionally fine and unspoilt" mansion serves as a significant piece of Scottish heritage. It is currently the headquarters for The King’s Foundation.
The house is uniquely significant as one of the few homes to retain its original 18th-century furniture, including specially commissioned pieces by Thomas Chippendale. Once the seat of the Earls of Dumfries and later the Marquesses of Bute, the estate was saved for the nation in 2007 by a consortium headed by King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) to preserve its historic collection.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the house to see its famous furniture and art or explore the expansive grounds and walled garden, which are listed for their landscape significance. The estate also features a visitor cafe, a bistro dining facility, and an education centre.
The estate grounds are free to enter and open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. There is paid admission to the House itself, by guided tour only.
