Sauchie Tower, also known as Devon Tower, is a 15th-century tower house located in Clackmannanshire near the village of Fishcross. Now protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, this impressive four-storey building was originally built by Sir James Schaw and served as a home for a family with close ties to the Scottish royal household.
History enthusiasts will find the site significant for its royal connections, as it was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1565 and King James IV. The tower stands 79 feet tall and features a corbelled parapet walk with open round towers at the corners, showcasing classic defensive architecture from the medieval period.
Visitors can view the exterior of this historic structure, which includes a hexagonal cap-house and a vaulted basement containing a well. While exploring the grounds, you can imagine the original moat and drawbridge that once surrounded the tower, or reflect on the archaeological excavations that have uncovered the site's long-standing heritage.
