St. Mungo's Parish Church
11 minute walk from Alloa station · Stirling, Central and Fife · Free entry

St. Mungo’s Parish Church is a grand Church of Scotland kirk. Named after the patron saint of Glasgow, the current building was designed by architect James Gillespie Graham and opened in 1819 to serve a growing nineteenth-century congregation. It replaced a smaller seventeenth-century structure and stands as one of the largest churches in Scotland from its era.
The church is a significant example of neo-perpendicular Gothic design, featuring a spectacular 207-foot crocketed spire supported by flying buttresses and corner turrets. Its history is tied to the city’s prosperity, with land donated by the Erskine family. Notably, its past ministers include James Fordyce, whose published sermons are famously mentioned in Jane Austen’s *Pride and Prejudice*.
Visitors can admire a striking exterior of droved ashlar and a tower furnished with a four-dial clock. Inside, the church features a panelled wooden ceiling and several beautiful memorial stained glass windows, such as the "Good Shepherd" and "Fisher of Men." The site offers a peaceful look at historic Scottish craftsmanship, from its ornamental railings to its finely toned bell.
