Sanquhar Tolbooth Museum

Located on the High Street, the Sanquhar Tolbooth is a Category A listed municipal building that houses a local history museum. Designed by William Adam in the Baroque style, this historic structure was completed in 1739 using stone from Sanquhar Castle.
The building features a striking symmetrical frontage with an external double forestair and a distinctive octagonal belfry. Inside, visitors can explore the former prison cells on the ground floor and the burgh council chamber.
The museum showcases local heritage, including artefacts from the mining industry and the knitting trade. You can also view notable works of art, such as a portrait of Sir William Cotts by Jacob Epstein.
