Sanquhar Castle

Sanquhar Castle is a historic 13th-century stronghold located in Dumfries and Galloway. Situated on the southern approach to the former royal burgh of Sanquhar, these ruins overlook the River Nith. Originally built by the Ross family, this scheduled monument later served as an ancestral home for the Crichtons.
The site is famous for hosting King James VI and I in 1617 with a display so grand it bankrupted the owners. Today, visitors can explore a unique mix of original medieval stonework and later 19th-century restoration attempts. You can see the structurally sound sections rebuilt by the 3rd Marquess of Bute alongside the ancient fortifications and deep defensive ditches.
