Auchinbaird Windmill

Auchinbaird Windmill is a historic vaulted tower grain mill located on a scenic ridge near Sauchie. Originally built in the late 17th or early 18th century using red sandstone rubble, this rare Scottish structure served as a meal mill before being converted into a decorative dovecote in the early 19th century.
Today, the site is a scheduled monument and a unique landscape feature. Visitors can admire the circular stone shell, which features a brick-built domed roof with a circular hole and a castellated parapet. Notable architectural details include a "rat course" and the remains of a vaulted basement that once allowed horse-drawn carts to enter for grain delivery.
While the original sails and machinery are gone, guests can view the interior through metal grills to see the outlines of old pigeon nesting boxes. Informative signage explains the site's transition from a windmill to a dovecote, which once provided fresh meat and fertilizer for local estates. It remains a fascinating example of historic industrial and agricultural heritage.
