Torry Battery

The Torry Battery is an artillery battery that has overlooked the city’s harbour since 1860. Originally built as a replacement for an older battery, this historic site served as a vital defence during the First and Second World Wars. It is now protected as a scheduled monument.

Visitors can explore a site rich in military history, where nine guns and a defensible barracks once stood. The battery was reconstructed and updated over the years to accommodate evolving technology, including smooth bore and breech loading guns used by the local artillery volunteer unit.

Today, you can stand on the grounds where soldiers guarded the coast until the site was decommissioned in 1956. You will see the remains of a defensive landmark that has survived decades of modifications, offering a unique glimpse into the city’s wartime heritage and maritime past.
