The Wards in Elgin is a valuable wetland and designated wildlife site. Once a historical peat bog used for grazing, this managed landscape now serves as a vital habitat where nature can thrive and visitors can enjoy the outdoors.
The site is significant for its peaty soil, which helps address climate change by storing carbon. It is home to a colony of Northern Marsh Orchid and wetland birds such as Snipe and Reed Bunting, supported by recent work to restore open water and plant native species.
Visitors can explore the area via a circular access path. A pond and dipping platform provide excellent spots to observe the local environment, while the center of the site remains undisturbed to ensure a peaceful haven for plants and animals.
