The Darn Walk
12 minute walk from Bridge of Allan station · Stirling, Central and Fife · Free entry

The Darn Walk is a rural leisure path linking Bridge of Allan and Dunblane in the Stirling area. This pedestrian route follows the east side of the Allan Water, traversing earthy and grassy terrain through woodland and open fields.
The path is steeped in local history, originating from an ancient trackway potentially used by the Romans. It was a subject of local contention in the 1850s and was later developed to enhance the local area. Notably, author Robert Louis Stevenson frequented the walk; it is suggested that a cave along the river served as the inspiration for Ben Gunn’s cave in Treasure Island.
Visitors can enjoy a scenic journey past landmarks like Kippenross House and the Dunblane golf course. The experience includes crossing footbridges over Wharry Burn and Cock’s Burn, exploring wooded gullies, and following long sunken sections between traditional stone walls.
