St Margaret's Cathedral
15 minute walk from Ayr station · South West

The Cathedral Church of Saint Margaret, also known as Ayr Cathedral, is a welcoming Roman Catholic cathedral located in Ayr, Scotland. As the seat of the Bishop of Galloway and the mother church of the Diocese of Galloway, it has served the community for nearly 200 years. Originally designed by architect James Dempster and opened in 1827, it was officially designated a cathedral in 2007.
Visitors will find a space rich in history and artistic significance. The building underwent a thorough makeover at the turn of the millennium, featuring a white color scheme, new furnishings, and a stunning collection of stained glass. A particularly moving feature is the "Water of Life" window, gifted by American families as a memorial to those lost in the Pan Am Flight 103 disaster. Beneath the high altar, two books signed by the community—the Book of Dedication and the Book of Remembrance—serve as a lasting legacy for the parish.
Inside, you can enjoy a blend of modern and traditional art. You can admire the symbolic "Divine Light" window and the intricate Celtic knots in the gallery glass, which represent eternity. In the sanctuary, contrast these modern works with original Victorian pictorial windows. Guests can also view the cathedra, a specially crafted bishop’s chair, and visit the Sacred Heart Chapel to see a meditation on love through ruby-red stained glass.
