Prestongrange Museum

Prestongrange Museum is an industrial heritage site located on the East Lothian coast between Musselburgh and Prestonpans. Once the original home of the National Mining Museum, this former colliery is now managed by East Lothian Council.

The site is significant for its centuries of intense activity, including glass works, potteries, and coal mining dating back to the 12th century. It features monumental relics such as the only Cornish beam engine remaining in situ in Scotland, a vast Hoffmann kiln, and a 19th-century pit shaft.

Visitors can roam the woodland site to explore giant machines, including pit head winding gear and a steam crane. You can discover Category A and B listed buildings, view exhibition galleries, or enjoy a mobile phone tour narrated by painter John Bellany while taking in views over the Firth of Forth.
