Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve
33 minute walk from Montrose station · Dundee, Aberdeen and North East · Free entry

Montrose Basin is a nearly circular tidal basin and Wildlife Reserve located on the east coast of Scotland. Situated inland of Montrose in Angus, this protected site forms part of the River South Esk estuary and is managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
This significant landscape features the largest area of saltmarsh in Angus and is a vital site for studying ancient sea level changes. Its rich history dates back over 5,000 years, with evidence of Neolithic monuments and a prehistoric tsunami that once reached the area.
Visitors can explore a variety of habitats, including reedbeds and extensive mudflats. The reserve is a haven for birdwatchers, supporting over 213 bird species like pink-footed geese, oystercatchers, and eiders. To enhance the experience, a dedicated visitor centre is located on the south side of the basin.
