The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre is located on the former site of Great Britain’s first operational military airfield. Run by a charitable trust, this historic station in Angus originally opened in 1913 and served through both World Wars until its final closure in 1952.
The site is significant for its collection of aviation history, including the world’s oldest aircraft hangars of their type. Visitors can explore a series of original and restored buildings, such as the 1915 HQ and the MT Hut, which house an extensive collection of artefacts, memorabilia, and a diorama of the 1940 airfield layout.
Experience the era of flight through full-size replica aircraft, including a Sopwith Camel and a Spitfire positioned at the main entrance. The museum offers interactive learning zones with a flight simulator, a Link Trainer, and audio-visual resources. You can also see various engines, a wartime tractor, and a historic Anderson shelter.
