Maybole Castle is an impressive 16th-century L-plan mansion located on the High Street in South Ayrshire. Originally built for the Earls of Cassillis, known as the "Kings of Carrick," this Category A listed building features walls up to 7 feet thick and Victorian-era extensions.
The castle is famed for the legend of John Faa and the Countess of Cassillis. Visitors can admire the decorative stonework, including an oriel window surrounded by carved faces, which marks "The Countess's Room." The exterior also showcases circular corbelled bartizans with conical roofs and a recessed area that once displayed the family coat of arms.
Today, the castle stands as the oldest inhabited dwelling in Maybole. You can explore a site rich in history, from its vaulted cellars and kitchen to the grand chambers of the upper levels, all while enjoying the surrounding conservation area and its beautiful green spaces.
