Crossraguel Abbey

Crossraguel Abbey is a ruined medieval religious house located near Maybole in South Ayrshire. Founded in 1244 by the Earl of Carrick, this former Cluniac abbey was once home to the "Black monks" and remains one of the most complete sites of its kind in Scotland.
The abbey is rich in history, featuring grand 15th-century architecture and links to the Ayrshire pilgrims’ trail. Visitors can explore the original monks’ church, the cloister, and a rare dovecote. A highlight of the site is the chapter house, which still features the monks' benches and an arched seat for the abbot.
During your visit, you can enjoy fine architectural details and experience the scale of the monastery by climbing the stairs to the top of the gatehouse tower. The site is maintained as a scheduled monument and is open to the public for an entrance charge.
