Baltersan Castle

Baltersan Castle is a ruined L-plan tower house located near Maybole in the agricultural landscape of Carrick, South Ayrshire. Dating back to 1584, this Category A listed building was originally constructed for John Kennedy of Pennyglen and Margaret Cathcart on the site of an earlier manor.
This "stately fyne house" is a significant example of a fortified laird's residence. Its architecture features walls four feet thick, a vaulted ground floor, and elegant ashlar angle-turrets. Historically, it is part of a wider Kennedy family landscape, closely linked to the nearby ruins of Crossraguel Abbey.
Visitors can view the impressive surviving masonry of this three-storey tower. Notable features include a corbelled watch-chamber with an oriel window and original gunloops. Set within its historic parkland, the castle offers a glimpse into Scotland's 16th-century architectural heritage.
