His Majesty's Theatre

His Majesty’s Theatre is a historic landmark and the largest theatre in north-east Scotland. Designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1906, this granite-clad venue seats over 1,400 people. It sits on Rosemount Viaduct, forming part of a famous local trio of buildings known as "Education, Salvation and Damnation."

The theatre is celebrated for its "Free Renaissance style" and a well-preserved interior featuring marble, alabaster, and Baroque decoration. Notably, it is one of only two theatres in the world to retain the title "His Majesty’s" throughout the reign of Elizabeth II. A striking 2005 glass extension seamlessly integrates modern design with the original Kemnay granite and copper dome.

Visitors can enjoy a range of performances including opera, plays, and pantomimes. The venue offers modern comforts such as a restaurant, the Terrace bar-cafe, and a coffee shop. The auditorium features a revolving stage and re-upholstered seating designed for increased legroom, while the building is fully accessible with lifts and dedicated wheelchair spaces.
