The Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as St Mary’s, is a historic Catholic church situated in Stonehaven. Designed by J Russell MacKenzie and opened in 1877, this intimate building was financed by Elsa Mona Rickart Hepburn, likely in memory of her daughter.
Built in the Neo-Gothic style using local brown sandstone, the church features the scale of a private chapel with seating for ninety people. Visitors can admire the elaborate exterior façade, which boasts a four-stage tower, a screen of short columns, and a bold Gothic arched door.
Inside, you will find a traditional interior with hammer beams and chevron patterns on the ceiling. Notable artistic details include a tall Gothic arch separating the nave from the sanctuary and the Stations of the Cross, which were painted by the Shetland artist F Walterson.
