Central Library

The Central Library is the principal public library for Aberdeen, housed in a historic building that opened in 1892. This landmark building was publicly funded and officially opened by Andrew Carnegie. It forms part of a famous trio of civic buildings known as "Education, Salvation and Damnation."

The library is a striking example of late 19th-century architecture, constructed from local grey granite with elegant arched windows and cornices. Inside, modern updates have enhanced the space, providing a dedicated children's library, multimedia areas, and upgraded study spaces for contemporary use.

Visitors can explore extensive collections documenting local life, including over 15,000 photographs, maps, and newspapers. The collections highlight Aberdeen's heritage in shipbuilding, fishing, granite, and the oil industry, with many historical records available to view on microfilm.
