Abertarff House
3 minute walk from Inverness station · Highlands and Argyll

Built in 1593, Abertarff House is the oldest house in Inverness. This 2½ storey town house is a classic example of 16th-century domestic architecture, featuring distinctive crow-stepped gables and a projecting turnpike staircase.
The house has a rich history, having witnessed the Jacobite risings and two world wars. Visitors can admire notable historic features, such as original oak timber beams and a beautiful 17th-century marriage stone located over the main fireplace.
Inside, you can explore two downstairs rooms featuring a history of Inverness. Staff and volunteers are available to share stories about what life was like in the 1600s or help you discover other Highland places. You may also enjoy a rotating exhibition as you experience this unique residential building.
