Aberdour Castle & Gardens

Aberdour Castle is one of the two oldest datable standing castles in Scotland. Held for centuries by the Douglas Earls of Morton, the site features a 12th-century hall house that was successively expanded over 400 years to include a 15th-century tower house and a refined 17th-century Renaissance wing.

The site is historically significant for its architectural evolution and its remarkably preserved grounds. The mid-16th-century terraced gardens are among the oldest in Scotland and were inspired by contemporary English designs. Visitors can explore the remains of the medieval tower and the roofed 17th-century wing, which once housed luxurious furniture and tapestries.

Today, guests can enjoy extensive views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh from the historic terraces. The grounds include a walled garden, a brewery, and a bakehouse. After exploring the ruins and the vaulted kitchens of the central range, visitors can stop at the cafe located within the restored south-east wing.
