Stumpy Jail, also known as Stumpy Tower, is a Category B listed building in Girvan, South Ayrshire. Located on Knockcushan Street—a name meaning "Hill of Justice"—this 29-meter tall steeple and former townhouse site stands as a prominent local landmark.
The site is historically significant as the former "Great Circle of Justice." Built in 1827, the four-stage steeple originally housed a ground-floor prison that was credited with improving the peace of the town. While an adjoining hall was destroyed by fire in 1939, the resilient tower remained standing.
Visitors can admire the steeple’s unique architecture, which features steeply battered walls and an octagonal belfry. You can view the spire, the weather vane, and the clock presented by Sir John Hamilton-Dalrymple, as well as the bell cast by Stephen Miller & Co of Glasgow.
