St Vigeans Sculptured Stones Museum

St Vigeans Sculptured Stones Museum is located in the Angus village of St Vigeans, the site of a former 8th-century monastery and royal estate. Housed in two listed 19th-century sandstone cottages, this museum managed by Historic Scotland sits close to the historic 12th-century church mound.
Visitors can explore an outstanding collection of 38 carved stones that once stood upon the old church hill. These fascinating artifacts provide a window into the Early Middle Ages, showcasing some of the finest examples of Pictish craftsmanship found in the region.
The collection features remarkable pieces like the 9th-century Drosten Stone. This rectangular slab displays a carved cross on one side and traditional Pictish symbols on the other. It is particularly notable for bearing a rare Pictish inscription written in Latin script.
