The Mote of Annan is a historic motte and bailey castle site situated on the scenic banks of the River Annan in Scotland. Originally built in the early 12th century, this ancient landmark is now officially designated as a scheduled monument.
History lovers will find the site’s connection to the famous de Brus family, Lords of Annandale, fascinating. Although it served as their main seat, the family eventually moved after a mid-12th century flood changed the river's course and eroded the castle mound. Later, in 1552, master mason David Dog was sent here to oversee work on the tower.
Today, visitors can explore the grounds of this former stronghold. It offers a unique opportunity to stand where medieval structures once stood and observe how the forces of nature shaped the local landscape and its historic defenses.
