Crookston Castle
13 minute walk from Crookston station · Glasgow and West Central

Crookston Castle is a ruined medieval stronghold in Glasgow, located on a hill overlooking the Levern Water. Built by the Stewarts of Darnley around 1400, it is the only surviving medieval castle in the city and sits within defensive earthworks dating back to the 12th century.
This historic site is notable for its unusual X-plan layout and its connection to famous figures like Lord Darnley and Mary, Queen of Scots. Visitors can explore the rectangular main block and the surviving north-east tower, which features a barrel-vaulted basement, a prison, and thick walls designed to withstand sieges. You can climb modern ladders to the top of the tower to enjoy an impressive view from the roof.
