Ardgowan Castle

Ardgowan Castle is a historic three-storey ruin of a 15th-century tower house located near the Firth of Clyde in Inverclyde. Originally known as Inverkip Castle, this category B listed building is situated on a promontory 60 feet above coastal flats within the private gardens of the Ardgowan estate.

The site is significant for its role in the First War of Scottish Independence, where it served as a vital medieval fortress besieged by Robert the Bruce. The current tower was built in the late 1400s on the grounds of an earlier castle and was later held by the Stewart family for centuries before being abandoned in 1801.

Although the castle ruin is located in a private garden and is not accessible to the public, visitors can enjoy clear views of the structure from a public path running directly below. From this vantage point, you can see the tower perched on a steep cliffside and appreciate the defensive location that once protected the coast from Viking raiders.
