Smith Art Gallery & Museum

The Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum, formerly known as the Smith Institute, is a dedicated art and local history museum. Established in 1874 through a bequest by artist Thomas Stuart Smith, the institution was founded to house his personal art collection and provide the community with a library and reading room.

The museum’s history is defined by its survival and growth. Once used as military billets during both World Wars, the building has since undergone major refurbishments to preserve its unique architecture. It is historically significant for its longstanding association with the Scottish art world, having hosted exhibitions by renowned artists such as McTaggart and Anne Redpath, and serving as the foundational home for the Stirling Fine Art Association.

Visitors can explore diverse collections ranging from contemporary art to local antiquities and natural history, including an extensive collection of taxidermy. Beyond the galleries, you can enjoy Ailie’s Garden, a biology-focused play area and garden situated at the rear of the museum. The museum offers a peaceful environment to study art and history, set away from the noise and bustle of the town.
