Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot
14 minute walk from East Linton station · Edinburgh and South East

Preston Mill is an 18th-century watermill and Category A listed building located on the River Tyne in East Lothian. In the care of the National Trust for Scotland, this historic site consists of a mill, a kiln, and the miller’s house, situated near the unique Phantassie Doocot.
The site is historically significant for its 16th-century origins and connection to engineer Andrew Meikle. It produced oatmeal commercially until 1959. Today, the mill remains a favorite for painters and photographers, who are drawn to the kiln's distinctive conical red pantile roof and the scenic mill pond.
Visitors can experience the machinery in motion as the River Tyne still drives the 1909 water wheel. You can explore the inner workings of the site through guided tours and view an exhibition dedicated to the history of milling.
