Dumfries and County Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-69 parkland course, set among mature trees on the northern side of Dumfries. Compact by modern standards, the course combines attractive surroundings with a challenging layout, including numerous trees and several blind tee shots.
The club was founded in 1912, with the original course designed by 1883 Open Champion Willie Fernie on land from the Nunfield Estate. Five-time Open Champion and renowned course architect James Braid later proposed substantial changes, replacing the old agricultural hedges and ditches with strategically placed bunkers. Further expansion and extensive tree planting helped shape the course seen today.
The quality of the greens is a particular feature and is frequently praised by visiting golfers. A programme begun in the 1990s saw all of the greens relaid to USGA standards, helping establish them as one of the course’s defining characteristics.
