National Museum of Rural Life
26 minute walk from Hairmyres station · Glasgow and West Central

The National Museum of Rural Life, managed by National Museums Scotland, is a multi-faceted heritage site located at Wester Kittochside farm between East Kilbride and Glasgow. The complex features a modern 50,000-square-foot visitor centre and exhibition building, the historic Georgian buildings of the farm, and species-rich fields spanning a 44-hectare estate.
The site is significant for its long history, having been farmed by ten generations of the Reid family for over 400 years. Visitors can explore the fine Georgian Laird's House, which has been preserved as it appeared in the 1950s, complete with original interior layouts and architecture intended to deter witches. The museum also houses the world's oldest surviving threshing mill and an impressive collection of agricultural machinery, including Europe's best collection of combine harvesters.
During a visit, you can experience a traditional working farm environment, featuring a restored horse engine used to drive machinery and rare structures like cast-iron stathels used to protect hay from pests. You may enjoy the exhibition building's displays on land, tools, and people, which include folklore charms, clothing, and toys. The surrounding landscape offers a view of well-preserved rig and furrow marks in the fields, showing how crops were grown centuries ago.
