Falkirk Wheel
28 minute walk from Camelon station · Stirling, Central and Fife · Free entry

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in central Scotland that serves as a vital link between the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal. Opened in 2002 as a 21st-century landmark, this impressive structure connects the two waterways for the first time since the 1930s.
This world-unique engineering achievement is shaped like a double-headed Celtic axe and functions as a piece of contemporary sculpture. It raises boats 24 metres, using Archimedes' principle to balance mass so efficiently that a half-turn requires only the energy equivalent of boiling eight kettles of water.
Visitors can explore a dedicated visitor centre and witness the wheel in action as it carries boats between the aqueduct and the basin. You can observe the mechanical precision of the rotating arms and the operation of the watertight doors as vessels transition through this historic Celtic-inspired structure.
