Dean Castle and Country Park
24 minute walk from Kilmarnock station · Glasgow and West Central

Dean Castle is a 14th-century stronghold in Kilmarnock. Situated within a 200-acre country park, this Category A listed building served as the Boyd family seat for over 400 years. It features a medieval keep built for defence and a palace designed for comfort, both restored following centuries of neglect.
The site is significant for its links to Robert the Bruce, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and Robert Burns. Notable features include the Great Hall’s vaulted ceiling, a bottleneck dungeon, and a legendary chest in the Laigh Tower. Visitors can explore world-class collections of European arms, armour, and early musical instruments.
Today, guests enjoy free daily tours of the castle interior. The surrounding park offers wildlife, a Rural Life Centre, and play parks. You can see a model of the castle in the Earls' private chamber or view the rare Kilmarnock Edition of Burns’ poetry in the banqueting hall.
