David Birthplace Livingstone Museum

The David Livingstone Birthplace Museum is a biographical museum in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, dedicated to the life of the famous explorer and missionary. It is housed in Shuttle Row, a category A listed building that was once a textile mill. This historic site is where Livingstone was born in 1813 and lived with his family.

The museum is significant for its diverse collection exploring Livingstone’s legacy and the history of the Blantyre Mills and Village. Visitors can see navigational and medical equipment used during his travels through Southern Africa. Highlights include bronze tableaux and a World Fountain created by sculptor Charles d'Orville Pilkington Jackson.

Experience Livingstone's journey from his childhood in the mills to his later expeditions. You can view 19th-century artefacts like bobbins and the Blantyre Works Library, which contains books available to the mill workers. The museum also displays tempera wall panels that tell the story of his early life.
