Colinton Tunnel

Originally part of an infrastructure project for a Victorian railway company, the tunnel remained sealed for over a decade following the line's eventual closure in the mid-twentieth century. Efforts to revitalise the interior began in the 1980s with the installation of lighting and an initial artistic project depicting a historical engine.

The interior now features a massive mural, considered the largest of its kind in the country with a historical theme. A creative team led by Chris Rutterford designed the artwork to cover the entire 140-metre length of the walls and ceiling. These illustrations reflect the social, industry-based, and literary culture of the surrounding neighbourhood. By replacing a once dark and neglected space with colourful designs, the project organisers aimed to foster a secure environment for residents and travellers.

Funding for the upkeep of this public art is provided by a registered charity and various local sponsors. Charitable donations allow for the ongoing cleaning and maintenance required to keep the illustrations bright. Beyond preserving the local heritage, the initiative was developed to encourage more people to support nearby shops and businesses.
